Consistency pays off for Bobbing and DPH Motorsport.
Yamaha Motor Australia press release:
DPH Yamaha’s Lawson Bopping burst through for his first round win in the premier MX1 division of the 2015 season with an impressive display at round five of the MX Nationals at the Coolum circuit on the Sunshine Coast.
Bopping, who has raced the softer surface of Coolum extremely well in the past, kicked off his day in the perfect fashion qualifying for the top five Superpole event and then putting in a blister lap to take P1 in the top five shootout.
With confidence high, Bopping charged to the front of moto one and began to edge away from the field. As the moto wore on, former world MX champion, Ben Townley, closed in on Bopping before making the pass at the 20 minute mark. Bopping stayed focused and within striking distance of Townley before crossing the finish line in second place.
Moto two again saw Bopping with a good start inside the top three during the early going. A fast freight train of Gibbs, Townley and Bopping pulled away from the chasing pack and looked settled in their positions until Townley fell and Bopping inheriting second place.
Gibbs stayed out of trouble and rode to a race win while Bopping with his 2-2 results did enough to score the round win. The round win moves Bopping up to fourth place in the championship and just seven points shy of second place.
“The track was really tough today so it is satisfying to get the win here,” Bopping said. “I felt good in practice but while it was good to have the speed, a good start here and no mistakes on the first lap might be even more important.
“It’s good to get the win and reward Dale and everyone on the team for their hard work. We have battled away for the first five rounds so getting the win here means we all head into the mid-season break with a positive attitude and some good momentum,” Bopping ends.
Just an hour later, it turned into a very memorable day for the DPH Yamaha team when Cheyne Boyd took the win in the Over 30 Veterans class with his 1-1 domination of the class. Boyd, who still races with pro like speed, was the reigning champion and again proved time hasn’t slowed him with another great performance.
“It was a great day for the team and a real morale booster that we all needed,” states team owner, Dale Hocking. “The first four rounds we have been pretty competitive but with no major results so for Lawson to get it done today and Cheyne to rack up another win was just the thing we have been looking for.
“I’m pretty proud of both of the guys and also the guys in the team. It’s a day we won’t forget for a while,” Hocking beams.
