Boyd and Bopping ride the ups and downs at Broadford.
DPH Motorsport press release:
In what marked a special round for the DPH Peter Stevens Yamaha team, as they paid tributes to the Australian Defence Force, with their ANZAC Appeal livery. The weekend certainly didn’t go according to plan on the track.
Lawson Bopping headed out for Practice/Qualifying, with hopes of getting his round off to the solid start. Lawson again showed the industry that he has great lap speed, as he topped the time sheets during the session. While Cheyne Boyd eased into the round, finishing in 14th.
Lawson entered his third consecutive GoPro Superpole, where he was hoping to make it third time lucky. As he set off first in the group of five riders, a few slight errors put him into 3rd position. Meaning he would have to wait another round, to secure his maiden GoPro Superpole. He was still happy to secure some valuable points in the championship hunt.
“I went out in practice and ended up qualifying first in that, so that put me into Superpole again. Went out first in Superpole, and ended up 3rd overall. It was ok though, I made a couple of little mistakes, but I was happy with it getting 3rd again. So I’ve made Superpole every round, which is good.” said Bopping.
As the gates dropped on Moto 1, both riders found themselves sitting in the Top 10. With each making a number of passes, it was Lawson who’s luck changed, as he high-sided the bike, only to find himself pinned under his machine. This put him to the back of the field, and left him with a big task ahead of him to regain points.
Cheyne kept with the pace of the leaders for he majority of the race, but unfortunately slipped back late in the Moto to finish 9th. Lawson who had lost his goggles during his fall pushed for the remainder of the Moto, to cross the line in 12th.
Moto 2 saw both Cheyne and Lawson get a good jump from the gates, with the pair battling against each other during the opening laps. It was Bopping who rounded Boyd after trailing form a number of laps. Though a number of errors and a lack of pace late in the Moto, meant neither of the pair were about to crack the Top-5. Lawson came home in 7th position, while Cheyne showed another solid display finishing in 10th.
Looking at the weekend’s Overall Results, Cheyne claimed 43 points to finish 9th, while Lawson collected 42 points to finish 10th, in a round he’d rather forget. The challenging Broadford circuit, meant a number of championship contenders shifted at the top, with Bopping dropping one spot, to currently sit in 5th position, on 158 points. Lawson knows he has areas to improve on, before he arrives at Murray Bridge.
“I want to improve on everything really, with fitness and bike speed. My lap speed is good, it’s just I need to be able to do that sprint speed the whole way through the Motos.“ said Bopping.
“I like Murray Bridge, as the dirt is good, so it should be better. I think we’ve got all my least favourite tracks out of the way early, so its all good as there is still plenty of racing to go.” Filling the seat while Beaton recovers from injury, Cheyne Boyd was happy with his round.
“Overall I’m fairly happy, my main thing is I have a business at the end of the day, and I want to be safe. I have a young son who’s 6 months old, and a fiancé, so my main thing is to have fun but still be safe. I know it’s hard to do that every weekend as we are racing motocross, but I enjoyed the weekend.” Boyd mentioned.
“The bike was great and the team is working well. Everyone is working really hard and everything from the Semi, to the catering today. It just seems like the team is gelling really well.” DPH Peter Stevens Yamaha Team Principle, Dale Hocking was a little disappointed that things didn’t go according to plan.
“Overall I think it was a bit of an up and down day, it wasn’t exactly what I had anticipated, obviously with Lawson qualifying 1st, and 3rd in GoPro Superpole. I thought we would have been on the box, but Lawson just had an up and down day, with a couple of crashes. We just couldn’t seem to get it together, it was just one of those days.” Hocking stated.
“Boydy rode well he finished in the Top 10, which is great for the fill in ride, so it was a great effort by Cheyne again. So we will continue to move forward, I’m not quiet sure if Cheyne will ride at Murray Bridge or not, but hopefully Ross will be back for it.”
