American Ryan Villopoto has confirmed that he will retire at the close of the 2015 MXGP World Championship after concluding the final year of his Monster Energy Kawasaki contract in grand prix racing.

Villopoto made headlines worldwide with his decision to exit American supercross and motocross after injury prematurely ended his season this year, instead opting to close out his career against eight-time world champion Antonio Cairoli in MXGP.

It’s now been made official by Villopoto that his GP deal will be a one-off campaign, set to retire for 2016 “win or lose” next season.

“I’m just trying to go over there and really enjoy this last year,” Villopoto stated. “This is a one-time deal. I am going to finish my career win or lose after this next season, but I’d love to win and leave on top.

“I’m not going to say it’s going to be easier or harder – it will for sure be different though. I know a lot of my fans are bummed that I won’t be racing supercross or outdoors, but I hope you tune in and follow me in GPs as this will be one ride you won’t want to miss.”
