Youthstream president Giuseppe Luongo has revealed at the 2014 FIM Motocross of Nations in Latvia today that a round of the MXGP World Championship could return to Australia in 2016.

In a press conference outlining various aspects of the series including potential future events, Luongo announced that discussions have been entered with Australian MX Nationals promoter Williams Event Management (WEM) to host an event.

Australia hasn’t hosted a world championship round since the famed Broadford events in 2000 and 2001, which saw the likes of Andrew McFarlane, Chad Reed and Michael Byrne make their marks on the world stage.

Victorian venue Broadford was announced as the season opener for 2011 by Youthstream, but was later dropped once the schedule was finalised.

WEM general manager Kevin Williams is currently out of Australia following the conclusion of the 2014 MX Nationals, unable to be contacted for comment as the news breaks. Motorcycling Australia is also yet to make comment on the possibility.

Luongo’s latest announcement comes in a continued on again, off again possibility of an Australian Grand Prix, leveraging off the back of an upswing in Australian riders successfully stepping into the world championship. Stay tuned for more when we have it.
