Regional-based series commences at Conondale MX Nationals.
The first round of the 2014 privateer North Cup kicked off at Conondale on the weekend, providing the chance for riders who aren’t supported by a factory team to kick-start their own battles.
The North Cup will take place over the next three rounds of the championship, concluding at Coolum from 30-31 August.
Conondale marked round one of the North Cup where Suzuki rider Hayden Mellross took the maximum 35 points up for grabs in the Motul MX1 class, followed closely by Husqvarna rider Darcy Jones who collected 32 points for second.
KTM’s Scott Green finished the day in third, followed by Daniel McEntee and TM’s Joel Milesevic to round out the MX1 class. Mellross also managed a ninth overall for the day after top-ten finishes in the two final motos, seeing him move into eighth in the Monster Energy MX1 championship.
In the Pirelli MX2 class, TM backed Joel Evans took top position from Mathew McEntee and Zaccari Luzzi respectively. Zane Keleher managed an impressive fourth place in the Cup, ahead of Matthew Kehl and Adam Hynds finishing the day in fifth and sixth places respectively.
Evans also managed a solid 14th place overall for round seven in the Motul MX2 Class and spoke of his excitement in taking out the first round of the North Cup.
“It’s pretty cool winning the first round of the cup. I was really excited to find out this morning,” he said. “It’s an awesome thing that Link Internation and the MX Nationals do, and it was awesome to get the set of Pirelli tyres.
“It’s hard enough being a privateer, so it’s always good to have a bit of an incentive and we really look forward to things like this.”
The next round of the North Cup will now head to Raymond Terrace on 3 August.
