Australian doubles up to close in on E3 series lead.
Tasmanian Matt Phillips has claimed a clean-sweep of the Finnish round of the 2014 Maxxis FIM Enduro World Championship at Heinola.
The factory KTM rider was dominant in the E3 ranks to close to within 12 points of the series lead. He won the opening day ahead of teammate Ivan Cervantes and Matti Seistola, before Sunday saw Mathias Bellino climb into the final podium position.
“I’m delighted to take three wins on the bounce,” commented Phillips. “Today went better than I expected. I attacked hard from the beginning to build up a lead and then made sure I rode steady in the afternoon to win.”
In the E2 class it was Pierre Alexandre Renet who took out both rounds to seize the series lead, while KTM’s Antoine Meo exited the event with suspected broken ribs after making contact with a tree on day one. Alex Salvini and Johnny Aubert shared the remaining podium spoils.
Eero Remes and Christophe Nambotin split wins in the E1 category, Cristobal Guerrero completing the podium on both days. Nambotin comfortably remains the series leader, 36 points over Guerrero.
It was a mixed weekend for the Aussies as the Women’s series resumed, with Jessica Gardiner riding her Sherco to 7-3 finishes. Jemma Wilson was consistent, carding a pair of sixth places for the round.
The world championship will continue in Sweden this weekend at Enköping on 14-15 June.
