Round six win propels Price to front of Outright and E2 titles.
He came, he saw, he conquered! Toby Price (KTM Enduro Racing Team) once again was just too strong by claiming the honours at round six of the 2014 Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championship at Hedley in Victoria winning both the E2 class and the Outright.
Price won all five heats bar the last one today, which was taken out by CDR Yamaha’s Chris Hollis, and took over the series lead in the process.
“All in all, it was a great weekend!” Price said. “Can’t complain about two firsts. Now we just have to try and stay smooth and consistent for the remaininder of the year now. It’s definitely unfortunate not having Daniel [Milner] here this weekend.”
Second Outright and second in the E2 class belonged to Active8 Yamaha Yamalube rider Josh Green. Green, who was 1m01.058s down on Price, started strong, however had a few small crashes towards the end of the day.
“The track has got really rough and really deep, which was quite nasty,” explained Green. “It was a good test and I’m happy enough with my result, but I want to win.”
Green is now just five points shy of Price in the Outright championship heading to Coonawarra next month.
Just like in round five, Husqvarna’s Glenn Kearney came home in third. He was once again the winner of the E3 class beating Husaberg’s Jarrod Bewley, who was sixth overall. Kearney is also locked on the same amount of points as Green with 114 points overall.
An amazing fourth place went to Victorian’s Daniel Sanders on his KTM, remaining the class of the new 19 and Under category. Sanders had a mechanical problem in the first heat which forced the youngster to ride his practice bike.
“I’m rapt with this fourth place as it’s my best finish to date,” Sanders said. “I’ll keep chipping away with it and hopefully get up there in the top three.”
Rounding out the top five was Hollis, who had a few falls in the first few tests but got faster and faster as the day went on in a welcome return to form aboard the WR450F.
“I lost too much time this morning,” reflected Hollis. “It took me a while to adapt to the pace in the sand. I don’t have anything like this at home, so it’s something I definitely have to work on for next time.”
After a DNF in round five due to mechanical gremlins, Bewley wrapped up sixth from Lachlan Stanford (Husqvarna Enduro Racing Team) in seventh. Active8 Yamaha Yamalube’s Beau Ralston was eighth as he continues his transition to off-road.
Price’s teammate Peter Boyle was ninth and the winner of the E1 class, with another Active8 Yamaha Yamalube pilot in Stefan Granqvist who rounded out the top 10.
Jess Gardiner (Balllard’s Motorex Off Road Team) was yet again too good for the field in the Women’s class going making it four round wins in a row. Gardiner will fly out this Wednesday back to Europe and get herself ready for the next round of the World Enduro Championship.
Gardiner this time beat Emelie Karlsson and Tayla Jones. Jemma Wilson was fourth again with Sophie Coldiutt rounding out the top five.
Other class winners included Kirk Hutton in the Vets, and David Flemming took out the Masters from Geoff Ballard and Trent Lean. The J2 Class was taken out by Joshua Brierley, with J3 won by Ben Kearns and Lyndon Snodgrass taking out the J4.
Rounds seven and eight will be held at Coonawarra in South Australia on 21-22 June.
