Cooper and Lamont crowned MX champions in New Zealand
Jay Wilson secures top three finish in MX2 for JCR Yamaha.
The Honda Shop Racing’s Cody Cooper has claimed his third New Zealand MX1 Motocross Championship, clinching the 2014 title at Taupo over the weekend.
Cooper made it back-to-back victories after switching from Suzuki to Honda in the off-season, winning two of the three motos to round out the season. Countryman Brad Groombridge (Suzuki) was second for the round after winning the final moto of the season.
Scotsman Billy Mackenzie (Altherm JCR Yamaha) completed his MX Nationals warm up with a solid second in the standings, edging out Groombridge by a single point after claiming third at Taupo.
The MX2 title was won by Husqvarna Red Bull WIL Sport NZ Racing’s Kayne Lamont, finishing eighth overall at the final round despite undergoing appendix surgery just two days before the season finale.
The round was won by Hamish Dobbyn (CMR Red Bull KTM) from Rhys Carter (Suzuki) and outgoing champion Scott Columb (Altherm JCR Yamaha).
Dobbyn sealed second in the series behind Lamont, while Australian Jay Wilson (Altherm JCR Yamaha) was third in the title chase via a fourth in the final round to conclude his NZ campaign.
