Barreda maintains Dakar pressure with Stage 7 win
HRC rider narrows Coma's lead as Dakar Rally resumes.
Team HRC’s Joan Berreda continues to pile on the pressure in the 2014 Dakar Rally, winning Stage 7 as the event entered Bolivia overnight.
After an early start at 4:30am, the first 100km of the special stage into Bolivia had to be shortened due to rain and poor visibility.
Barreda did a perfect job following the day’s rest, passing Marc Coma during the technical first part of the stage and clawing back four minutes and three seconds – now 38m14 in arrears.
Today marks the second marathon stage, so no team assistance and external service is allowed.
“It was a good day today, I could push and gain some minutes back from Marc Coma,” Barreda said. “It was not so easy, some tricky sections with mud from last night´s rain. I am happy to be able to attack and I am confident for the coming stages.”
Race leader Coma ended the stage second for Red Bull KTM, while Yamaha’s Cyril Despres was third. Overall, Coma leads from Barreda and Jordi Viladoms, who was 10th on Sunday.
Australian Troy O’Connor is 43rd overall, Allan Roberts 46th and Yamaha rider Shane Diener now 55th as he continues to climb the order.
