GYTR Yamaha’s Jay Wilson will contest the New Zealand Supercross Championship as part of Josh Coppins’ Altherm JCR Yamaha team alongside fellow Australian Matt Haworth.
The newly-crowned Under 19s national supercross champion will ride MX2 for Coppins, while Haworth will campaign the team’s MX1 entry.
Wilson sealed the Australian title in Toowoomba’s season finale last weekend with a runner-up result, capping off the five-round season with a 1-1-1-1-5 scorecard.
“I’m so happy that’s over and we got the championship,” Wilson said. “It’s been three weeks since the last round and it’s been like walking on egg shells but we got it done and that’s what matters.
“I didn’t ride the best tonight, a bit stiff and tight and also most too cautious but I had to keep one eye on the race and the other on the championship and not do anything silly.
“I can’t thank the GYTR Yamaha team enough. They have been right behind me all year and they continue to provide me with the best bikes and support so it’s nice to win this championship for them as much as it is for me.”
The NZ SX series will commence this Sunday, 24 November, in Timaru before the second and final round is staged on Thursday, 28 November, in Winton as part of the Burt Munro race week.
Cody Cooper is slated to make his official Honda debut in the Ben Townley-managed The Honda Shop team.
