Australia’s Todd Waters has landed a coveted seat in the 2014 FIM World Motocross Championship, this evening announced alongside Tyla Rattray as an MX1 rider in the new-look Husqvarna Factory Racing Team.
The outfit will race under the Red Bull ICEONE Husqvarna Factory Racing label, with the ICEONE team owned by Formula 1 ace Kimi Räikkönen.
“ICEONE Racing is pleased to welcome our new riders Tyla Rattray and Todd Waters, both from outside Europe, to the world championship series,” said Räikkönen.
“The new Red Bull ICEONE Husqvarna factory team is aiming for the top. We believe it can be reached by our dedication to the sport, and by the commitment of our riders and their determined will to win.”
Waters has been one of the Monster Energy MX Nationals’ form riders in 2013, and sits a strong second prior to this weekend’s season final at Coolum – just 25 points in arrears of series leader Matt Moss.
In a long-speculated transition, Waters has been open about his ambition to race in the world championship after representing Australia at the Motocross of Nations last year and scheduled to again next month in Germany.
Waters was a revelation in 2012 as part of Motul Pirelli Suzuki on his way to second behind Josh Coppins in the MX Nationals, before switching to Motorex KTM in a lucrative deal that severely boosted his international aspirations.
KTM acquired Husqvarna earlier this year (click here for details) and later announced it would feature ICEONE as the official factory Husqvarna Racing team (click here for details).
The move was initially hinted right here on MotoOnline.com.au in last week’s edition of MX Hub (click here to view).
