Belgian Clement Desalle has celebrated his first-ever home FIM Motocross World Championship win in Belgium while Aussie Dean Ferris achieved a career milestone with a comprehensive overall victory in the MX2 ranks.

Rockstar Energy Suzuki’s Desalle achieved his primary goal of winning the grand prix, needing to do so to keep himself in the title race against runaway leader, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli.

Cairoli took the early lead of the first MX1 race, with Desalle in close pursuit. Desalle would crash in his pursuit of the Italian rider but recovered for second.

The title protagonists resumed their battle in the second race, with Desalle taking an early lead and extending for a comfortable victory, taking the grand prix win by virtue of his higher-place finish in the second race.

Cairoli leaves Belgium with a 90-point advantage over Desalle, and only 100 further points are up for grabs over the following two grands prix.

Honda World Motocross rider Evgeny Bobryshev was back on the podium in Belgium with 4-3 finishes. Bobryshev lamented slow starts to both races but was able to battle back with good race rhythm and line selection.

Rockstar Energy Suzuki World’s Kevin Strijbos was fourth overall from Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jeremy Van Horebeek.

The Belgian Grand Prix proved a career breakthrough for Aussie Ferris, who dominated qualifying proceedings in the MX2 ranks on Saturday before going on to win both races on Sunday.

Ferris made good starts in both races, passing teammate Maxime Desprey after a solid battle in the opener, and displacing Glenn Coldenhoff quickly in the second race.

The 23-year-old joins Jeff Leisk, Chad Reed and the late Andrew McFarlane as one of only four Aussies to win at grand prix level.

Jordi Tixier was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s top finisher in second after recently-crowned MX2 champion Jeffrey Herlings retired from the grand prix with injury.

Tixier’s 2-5 finishes earned him the second step on the podium, with Standing Construct’s Coldenhoff going 8-2 for third overall.

Spaniard Jose Butron took fourth overall from fellow KTM rider, Frenchman Romain Febvre.
