Victorian rookie Kale Makeham has opened up discussions for the 2014 season, expected to remain in MX2 as a title favourite following a superb maiden season in the category this year.
The 19-year-old has exceeded expectations aboard a factory-supported Tune Tech Racing KTM 250 SX to date in 2013, sitting second in the standings with five overall podiums and a moto win to his credit.
That form has elevated interest in Makeham for next year already and he’s anxious to get a deal wrapped up in order to refocus his energy on the remainder of the MX Nationals series and Supercross.
“I’m just taking everybody’s offers as they come,” Makeham said. “I came into this year as a fifth to 10th place guy and now I’m battling for wins, so obviously there is interest there and we’re just going to take it as it plays out.
“I’m talking to a few people, but there’s nothing on paper. I’d like to wrap it up early, keep my focus and chase championships next year.”
And with a number of teams eager to witness Makeham’s ability on a four-stroke as many of the factory teams field, he has no doubts a transition would be a seamless one if the opportunity comes forward.
“As long as I’m on the podium and having fun, that’s all that matters to me,” he added. “People want to see if I can get it done on a four-stroke, but I know I can so if that opportunity arises next year I’ll just straight at it – I’m not scared to get out there on one.”
Makeham’s opening moto victory at Appin marked the first attained by a 250cc two-stroke since they became eligible to compete against the 250Fs in the MX2 division.
