Motorex KTM’s Kirk Gibbs has continued his strong rookie MX1 season earning his second podium of the season at Appin’s round six of the Monster Energy MX Nationals Australian Motocross Championship.
The South Australian took his first-ever premier class podium at Broadford’s round four, an impressive feat amongst the stacked field of seasoned MX1 contenders.
Continuing his spectacular rise in MX1 ranks, Gibbs posted his best ever finish in the class with a second in moto one before backing that up with fourth in moto two for third overall on the day.
“I probably could have done a little better in SuperPole today but on my lap Lawson [Bopping] fell in front of me and I had to go wide around him,” said Gibbs. “In the first race I was second under pressure from Jake Moss, but it’s a hard track to pass on and I tried to just focus on riding my own race.
“In the second moto I had a pretty good pace going but trying to get around Billy [Mackenzie] I got stuck in his pace which allowed [Adam] Monea to catch us, so I need to work on that.”
For Gibbs, moving forward in the championship is his main focus, and just over half way through the 10-round series he is doing just that.
“I’m going better and moving forward which is the main thing. It’s only my rookie year and as long as I’m at the pointy end, I’m happy,” he added. “Things are a little harder in MX1 adjusting to the bike and the depth of talent, so to be running up near the front with these boys is something I’m just stoked about.”
Gibbs currently sits sixth overall in the MX1 championship standings with four rounds remaining on the 2013 MX Nationals calendar.
