Catching Up: Matt Moss

MotoOnline.com.au catches up with Motul Pirelli Suzuki's Matt Moss.

Motul Pirelli Suzuki’s Matt Moss has put together a strong 2013 Monster Energy MX Nationals MX1 campaign to date, clinching a round win at Broadford and placing himself second overall in the championship chase after five rounds.

Moss took advantage of the lengthy six-week mid-season break and made his way to the US with his twin brother Jake to lay down laps on the perfectly prepared tracks of Southern California.

With Appin’s round six taking place this weekend in New South Wales, MotoOnline.com.au caught up with Moss today to talk about how his US trip went, how he feels heading into the second half of the season and plenty more.

You returned recently from a mid-season US training trip. How did that go for you and what did you get up to on a daily basis over there?

It was really good. Obviously going with Jake [Moss], with him living up in Queensland and me living in Sydney we never really get to ride with each other. So that was a good thing and it was a bonus having Dan Reardon from AlterEgoElite.

Being an ex-racer and knowing how physically demanding the sport it and how hard it is on your body, he knew what we had to do every day. He also helped us out so much with out off the bike training. We went over there with a goal and I think we achieved it, we wanted to get faster, fitter and stronger – between myself, Jake and Dan we’ve achieved that.

You mentioned training with Dan Reardon from AlterEgoElite. It sounds like a cool deal to have the same trainer as your brother and to be able to work alongside him?

Definitely, but ultimately he understands that although we are twins, we’re both different. I like to work a certain way and Jake works a certain way, he understands that being an ex-racer and knowing that Jake and me do different things and we’re better at different things. He understands that off the bike training and he’s so good with all that sort of stuff, he’s very knowledgeable.

As we head into Appin’s round six this weekend, it’s almost like the season is restarting again. How do you feel coming into Appin compared to the first round at Raymond Terrace?

I feel great, I feel the best I have for a long, long time. I feel strong, fit and the bike is excellent and the team is great. I’ve said it a million times, Jay [Foreman] said just be there in the hunt at the half way mark and I think we’ve done that. Now it’s really time to chase that championship and really go after it to try and get it.

You mentioned the need to be in the title hunt mid-season, which you definitely are. With Todd Waters being under an injury cloud for this weekend are you thinking about that situation at all, or is it just going to be business as usual for you?

Nah, if you try and control someone else or control other people, it always comes back and bites you in the ass. I’m not fussed, I don’t care what any of the other guys are doing. I’ve got a job, I’m out there by myself and we’re going to win races.

I don’t care what all the other guys are doing as long as I’m trying to get that number on plate at the end of the day. It’s unfortunate, but you know, that’s racing. Everyone’s gone through their bad luck and obviously he’s got some.

Finally, we’ve seen you out on Appin’s public track this week pounding out laps and you definitely looked fast. The Bellbird Circuit that the race will be held on can be quite tricky depending on the way it has been prepared, how do you feel about that track?

I really like it, I’ve always liked Appin and I’ve sort of been brought up on that sort of hard-pack stuff. It’s my local track and a lot of family and friends will be coming out to watch, so I’m looking to come out swinging that’s for sure. I’m either going to win this championship or I’m definitely not going to go down without swinging. I can’t wait.

Thanks for the chat and good luck on the weekend mate!

No worries, thanks mate.
