Carlton Dry Honda Racing's Ben Townley has returned with mixed feelings following his debut at the 2013 KTM Hattah Desert Race over the weekend.
Carlton Dry Honda Racing’s Ben Townley has gained new found respect for the KTM Hattah Desert Race following his debut at the famous event over the weekend.
In his first competitive event since retiring from full-time racing, the former world motocross champion finished 15th outright and sat as high as fifth during the early stages of the four-hour race.
The Kiwi rider admits that the Hattah Desert Race is one of the toughest motorcycling events he has contested to date after the demanding circuit forced him to return to the pits for a mid-race breather.
“This race was both mentally and physically demanding,” Townley said. “I hit a wall at around the two hour mark and I had to come in and take a breather. I had something to eat and drink and then went back out.”
Townley admits that he did underestimate the gruelling event, but comes away with positive reports from the race and looks forward to returning again in the future.
“I underestimated how tough it was going to be but it was still a fantastic experience and I really want to come back and do it again,” he added.
Townley’s teammate Peter Boyle went on take third overall in the event while team owner Yarrive Konksy was forced to retire from the event on lap four due to injury.
