DPH Motorsport Byrners Suzuki rider Sam Martin believes a top 10 finish at his home track of Wonthaggi is achievable as the Monster Energy MX Nationals continues in Victoria this weekend.

Martin finished 16th on debut in the MX1 class at Raymond Terrace, and was left to rue a front brake problem in the opening moto at Murray Bridge which saw him struggle to 17th overall.

The Gippsland-raised rider knows the Wonthaggi track well, and hoped to deliver his best performance of the season to date in front of supporters.

“I consider Wonthaggi to be my home track, the surface suits me well and I’m looking forward to racing in front of friends and family,” said Martin.

“Whist I’m not totally happy with my results in the first two rounds, from qualifying and early stages of each moto, I know my pace is good enough to run inside the top ten and race with the factory riders.”

The Suzuki RM-Z450 pilot is pleased with his decision to bypass the MXD class and and focus on the challenge offered by racing the best in MX1.

“As I’ve only just turned 18, it was a tough decision not to race the MXD class this year, however I just feel more comfortable on a 450, so I chose to make an early step to MX1,” he explained.

Martin heads to round three in 16th place on the MX1 class standings.
