MotoOnline.com.au takes a look back at the 2012 KTM 2-Stroke National in this edition of Rewind.
Coolum’s 2012 season finale of the Monster Energy MX Nationals saw the introduction of an all-new, or should I say reborn, class – the KTM 2-Stroke National.
With the recent spike in two-stroke interest and an obvious return of the premix bikes to our local tracks and national events, it was only natural that the bikes were allocated their own class eventually.
The two-stroke-only class kicked off with a bang in Coolum, sporting a full grid of riders and a deep field of talent for a class that was in most cases expected to be a ‘fun’ race more than anything else.
Dean Porter came out swinging aboard his Suzuki RM250 and took home the overall with Brock Winston in the runner-up spot and Keiron Hall rounding out the top three.
Kevin Williams, of Williams Event Management, commented before last year’s event that the opportunity to further extend the two-stroke events was a possibility if the numbers and interest were strong.
“We’ve been working together with KTM to introduce the 2-Stroke National at Coolum and it will be really exciting to bring the ‘ding-ding’ back to motocross,” said Williams.
“Depending on the success and entry numbers at Coolum, we may look to increase the opportunities to field a dedicated two-stroke category in the 2013 series.”
Obviously with a four-round KTM 2-Stroke Cup series kicking off this weekend in Wonthaggi, the inaugural event sparked enough interest to go bigger and better for 2013.
