Calvin, Bolton and Moore win opening round of WAMX in Kalgoorlie

Kalgoorlie hosted the blockbuster opening round of the 2013 Healthways-Smarter Than Smoking WAMX State Motocross Championships.

It was a brilliant weekend for Motocross fans in the Western Australian Goldfields town of Kalgoorlie, which hosted the blockbuster opening round of the 2013 Healthways-Smarter Than Smoking WAMX State Motocross Championships.

In one of the most hotly contested and highly anticipated starts to a Western Australian series, injury had sidelined defending Pro Lites and Pro Open Champion Dean Porter and 2011 Pro Lites Champ David Birch. This left the field wide open in the championship classes, and the riders took up the challenge.

The Pro Lites championship was up for the taking and the field did not give an inch in all three of their motos, West Coast Honda’s Robbo Lovett was on fire, former champ Josh Adams (Herb Watson Racing) and Kyle Webster (Wellard/Class/Yamaha) to battle for the lead whilst Jayden Rykers (Mandurah City KTM) made his debut into the Senior ranks with another flawless display of plain tough determined racing.

Five Star Yamaha’s Craig Bolton was keeping Mandurah City KTM rider Daniel Shrimp and Causeway KTM’s Shane Murray at bay.

With three different winners for the day the overall results had consistency the key with Craig Bolton taking the points as a result of his 4-3-4 finishes, Robbo Lovett picked up second from his 11-4-1 results for the day whilst third step of the podium had Daniel Shrimp by virtue of his 5-7-2 results.

The Smarter Than Smoking Pro Opens belonged to Five Star Yamaha’s Luke Davis in the first two motos, showing the field and spectators that he really is an emerging talent, he even adapted to the track that wasn’t his favourite and beat the hard pack specialists early on in two very commanding performances.

Herb Watson Racing’s Josh Adams, Wellard/Claas Yamaha’s Kyle Webster, Mandurah City KTM’s Louis Calvin, MotoXFit’s KTM Stevie Heilers, and Craig Bolton (Five Star Yamaha) could do little to stop the Davis 11-second juggernaut lead in moto one.

It was a similar result in moto two as Davis held onto a four second win over Calvin, Webster and local rider Jarrad Hockley and Wellard/Class Yamaha’s Ashley Whisler.

Moto three saw a spectacular first corner crash involving Davis, Hockley and Whisler. Davis and Hockley dramatically crashed out with Davis’ Yamaha crashing through the fence and the rider ending up over the fence.

This allowed Louis Calvin to get through with Whisler in second, Paul Humbertson (Mandurah City KTM) in third and Stevie Heilers fourth. Hockley was unable to continue yet Luke Davis with assistance dragged his bike out of the tangled fence and remounted in last position.

Despite a damaged bike and injury, Davis managed to salvage some points to finish 15th with the fastest lap times of the moto. Louis Calvin took the top step of the podium with his 3-2-1 results, Luke Davis finished second 1-1-15 and Kyle Webster picked up third overall with 2-3-9.

Defending Women’s Champion, Jess Moore put not only WA on notice, but the entire country, when she took a clean-sweep of all three motos in the Women’s class. Moore gained all three holeshots and was not challenged.

Continuing on her sensational form in the FIM Women’s World MX Championships has done wonders for the Kalgoorlie local, who also picked up third place in the Intermediate Lites category as well.

Next up the WAMX will move to another hard packed track at Henley Park, Byford on Sunday, 26 May.
