After taking a brief break over the Easter weekend, the 2013 Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM World Championship, is set to resume this weekend in Houston for round 13.
Monster Energy Kawsaki’s Ryan Villopoto continues to lead the premier 450SX class as the series end nears, carrying a 12-point lead over his closest competitor Davi Millsaps of the Rockstar Energy Racing team.
Villopoto not only took home the 450SX main event win in last year’s Houston event, he was also able to clinch the championship inside Reliant Stadium five rounds before the Las Vegas season finale would take place.
Millsaps took the runner-up spot during last year’s event with Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer rounding out the podium in third position.
Former 450SX Supercross champion Ryan Dungey will be looking to create an upset in Houston. The Red Bull KTM rider sits just 10 points behind Millsaps in the points chase heading into this weekend’s event.
Unfortunately Australia’s Chad Reed confirmed today that he will be unable to line up at Houston this weekend. After undergoing mid-season knee surgery, the TwoTwo Motorsports rider plans to make a return at next weekend’s Minneapolis round.
In the 250SX class it is GIECO Honda’s Wil Hahn who leads the charge heading into round 13. Hahn sits six points head of his closest rival Marvin Musquin.
Musquin, of the Red Bull KTM team, has wrapped up three-straight main event wins at Daytona, Indianapolis and Toronto, and you can expect the former MX2 FIM Motocross world champion to shoot for that series lead this weekend.
Trailing behind Hahn and Musquin is Rockstar Energy Racing’s Blake Wharton. Wharton sits 20 points behind Musquin currently and has been a serious threat for race wins. Wharton is a Texas native, so look out for him to be working the hometown advantage.
Australia’s Jackson Richardson scored his first top 10 finish in Toronto and will be looking to maintain those impressive results in Houston. Fellow Aussie privateer Taylor Potter is also getting amongst the US action, but is yet to qualify for a 250SX main event.
