Australia’s Dean Ferris is yet to confirm the possibility of a return to racing at the upcoming Valkenswaard FIM Motocross World Championship round in The Netherlands on 1 April.
After crashing hard whilst competing at the Dutch Motocross Championship season opener in Halle, the Monster Energy Yamaha rider was left with a broken collarbone, fractured rib and a slightly punctured lung.
Ferris opted to go under the knife just days after the accident, in hopes to make a speedy recovery as the GP schedule took a small break – but at this point Ferris is still unsure if he will be lining up for round three.
“At this point I haven’t confirmed whether I’m riding Valkenswaard,” Ferris told MX Large. “I’d love to and I want to try and ride the day before the event starts to see if it’s possible and then go from there.
“If I do ride I obviously want to try and do well, but it’s going to be tough with two injuries and the docter said maybe the rib will hold me back more than the collarbone. With the breathing and everything – it’s in a bad spot.”
Ferris admits that he needs more practice in the sandy conditions that Valkenswaard has on offer, forcing the 22-year-old to channel 100 percent of his focus and knowledge into the event providing his health allows him to race.
“But if I do [race], I’m going to have to put all my knowledge and all my focus 100 percent on riding because I’m actually a bit out of sand practice,” he added. “For me to even go to the event, I’m going to have to focus more than ever.”
Kicking off his 2013 campaign with a career best second overall in Qatar, Ferris currently sits third overall in the MX2 standings 30 points behind series leader and defending champion Jeffrey Herlings.
