After a successful start to the 2013 season in Qatar, the FIM Motocross World Championship travels all the way from the Middle East to Thailand this weekend for round two of the series.
It will be the first time that Thailand entertains a Grand Prix event, with an all-new track on hand, built specifically for this event.
Being an all-new location on the FIM Motocross World Championship calendar, the riders will enter the event on a level playing field with no prior track time under their belts.
Rockstar Energy Suzuki World’s Clement Desalle heads into the Si Racha event holding the MX1 class red plate, after taking the season opening win in Qatar.
The Belgian leads the MX1 points chase by two points over defending MX1 champion Antonio Cairoli. Desalle will be looking to emulate his Qatar performance during round two in a bid to earn himself the MX1 title crown.
Cairoli, aboard his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing KTM 350SX-F, won the Qatar Super Final and proved he has the speed to take home wins – he will surely be looking to put himself on top of the box in Thailand.
Kawasaki Racing Team’s Gautier Paulin had a very consistent weekend in Qatar and he is now third in the MX1 standings. The French rider steady is now in his second year in the premier class and he will be fighting for another podium finish this weekend in Thailand.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings entered the season as a big question mark after recently injuring his knee.
However, the current defending MX2 champion dominated the first heat and finished seventh in the Super Final, being the best MX2 rider of the race.
This weekend the Dutch rider will focus on keeping the red plate on his bike but he will also try to improve on the seventh position in the Super Final and try to enter the top five.
Second in the MX2 points is Monster Energy Yamaha’s Dean Ferris, the Australian had an impressive start to the season last weekend finishing second overall.
Ferris’ move to the MX2 class looks to be paying off and he will be putting in the hard work to pick up his pace and try to stop Herlings in Thailand.
Romain Febvre from France finished closely behind Ferris in third aboard his Wilvo Nestaan JM Racing KTM last weekend. He will be another strong rider during round two, looking to battle it out with Ferris and Herlings.
Thailand’s Grand Prix will take place this weekend on 10 March, stay tuned to MotoOnline.com.au for complete results and reports from the event.
