In front of over 50,000 fans inside San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium, Rockstar Energy Racing's Davi Millsaps clinched his second 450SX main event win of the 2013 Monster Energy Supercross season.
In front of over 50,000 fans inside San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium, Rockstar Energy Racing’s Davi Millsaps clinched his second 450SX main event win of the 2013 Monster Energy Supercross season.
Millsaps pulled the Nuclear Cowboyz holeshot with RCH/Dodge/Sycuan/Suzuki’s Broc Tickle and TwoTwo Motorsports’ Chad Reed following in second and third positions.
Tickle faded further back into the pack, while Millsaps, Reed and Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Barcia pushed forward to open up a sizeable gap over the rest of the field.
Reed, the most succesful rider inside Qualcomm Stadium with six wins to his name, was on the move and closing on Millsaps, before losing his front end in a corner and falling back to seventh position.
Behind Millsaps it was Barcia who held on for second place, while Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey moved his way into the third and final podium position.
Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart took fourth, while Reed clawed his way back to fifth place, finishing one spot ahead of the 450SX defending champion Ryan Villopoto of the Monster Energy Kawasaki team.
Millsaps extends his points lead to 19 over Dungey in second, while Villopoto sits 27 behind the lead spot. Reed sits fifth overall in the championship standings, 35 points behind Millsaps.
Eli Tomac made his return to the top step of the 250SX podium in San Diego, after going two rounds without a win the GEICO Honda rider returned to his previous form.
Rockstar Energy Racing’s Jason Anderson took the 250SX holeshot with Tomac and Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen following closely behind him.
Tomac took the race lead on lap four, instantly pulling a gap over Anderson in second place. Roczen then worked his way past Anderson on lap seven and began charging his way forward, cutting into Tomac’s lead considerably.
The final lap of the race provided plenty of excitement, with Roczen coming within a couple of bike length of Tomac as they riders crossed the finish line.
Behind Tomac and Roczen it was Anderson who rode to a solid third place finish, with Austin Politelli in fourth and Kyle Cunningham in fifth.
Australia’s Josh Cachia finished a season best 12th overall aboard his JDR/J-Star/KTM, while ADR Motorsports’ Kade Mosig failed to qualify for the main event.
Roczen maintains his 250SX series lead with a 17 point gap between himself and Tomac in second, Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda’s Cole Seely sits in third place 43 points behind Roczen.
The 250SX west coast riders will now take a break while the season heads east to Arlington, Texas for the first round of the east coast series on Saturday 16 February.
