In front of over 40,000 fans, Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey scored his first 450SX main event win of the season at Anaheim’s round five of the 2013 Monster Energy Supercross series over the weekend.
After suffering a mechanical malfunction during his heat race, forcing him into the LCQ race, Dungey scraped through to the main event after taking the final transfer position available.
With a strong start from the outside, Dungey found himself in the lead during lap one and quickly began to make a run for the win – Rockstar Energy Suzuki’s Davi Millsaps made a push for the lead, but was unable to make a move stick.
Millsaps, along with Yoshimura Suzuki’s James Stewart and Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Barcia, remained close throughout the race, battling for the final two podium spots.
Eventually it was current series leader Millsaps who took out the second place spot, while Barcia took out third place, pushing Stewart back to fourth overall on the night – his best finish to date.
TwoTwo Motorsports’ Chad Reed was fifth overall after a small crash on lap one, the Australian put in an impressive ride to salvage a top five result. Defending champion Ryan Villopoto also fell early, resulting in an eighth place finish for the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider.
Aussie Dan McCoy missed out on the Anaheim main event after finishing with a fifth place in the LCQ, with only the top two riders transferring into the 20-lapper.
Millsaps maintains his 450SX championship lead with a 20-point lead over Dungey in second, Honda Muscle Milk’s Trey Canard holds down third place overall just one point behind Dungey.
Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen proved why he now holds the 250SX red plate, taking his second victory of the season at Anaheim in impressive fashion.
The former FIM Motocross World MX2 champion made a move for the lead on lap one, after JDR/J-Star/KTM’s Joey Savatgy scored the holeshot, quickly laying down fast laps to the finish.
Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Martin Davalos followed Roczen, keeping him honest throughout the 15-lap race. Davalos would finish with the runner-up spot, marking his best performance of the year.
Defending champion Eli Tomac was forced to make his way through after an average start, proving to be a very tough task. The GEICO Honda rider was unable to bridge the gap to the lead duo of Roczen and Davalos, finishing up in third.
Roczen extends his points lead to 14 over Tomac, while Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda’s Cole Seely sits third overall in the 250SX championship after five of nine rounds.
Australia’s Josh Cachia and Kade Mosig both laid down promising performances at Anaheim, with Cachia landing a fourth place heat race finish aboard his JDR/J-Star/KTM, before capturing a 14th place overall in the main event.
Mosig transferred directly into the main event on his ADR Motorsports Kawasaki, maintaining that momentum to take home a 16th place finish – both riders achieving a season-best placing respectively.
The 2013 Monster Energy Supercross series will now roll into San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium for round six on 9 March.
