Red Bull KTM factory rider Cyril Despres picked up his fifth Dakar Rally trophy after crossing the finish line of the world’s most famous rally, after more than 8000 km of grueling racing.
Red Bull KTM factory rider Cyril Despres picked up his fifth Dakar Rally trophy after crossing the finish line of the world’s most famous rally, following more than 8000 km of grueling racing.
Despres’ long factory support rider, Ruben Faria, of Portugal won the 14th and final stage of the event and finished second overall. Faria was just over 10 minutes behind the leader Despres at the finish line.
Joan Barreda was second in the final stage, with Helder Rodrigues following closely in third, rounding out the top three for the stage rankings.
With Despres taking the overall victory, closely followed by teammate Faria, it was Francisco Lopez who took home third place with Ivan Jakes in fourth and Joan Pedrero rounding out the top five overall for 2013.
Australia’s Dakar Rally contenders finished up strong with Rod Faggotter leading the charge in 14th place overall, fellow Australian Ben Grabham followed Faggotter across the line in 15th.
Warren Strange saw himself finish up with a 23rd position overall, while Todd Smith, Simon Pavey and Matt Fish took home 34th, 60th and 111th placings.
