Barcia, a two-time Monster Energy Supercross East Coast 250SX champion, entered his rookie year in the premier class with high expectations, and the Georgia native delivered very early in the season, cementing himself as a key player in the 2013 title chase.
Barcia was on a roll, winning his heat race and dominating the main event start before running away to win by a solid margin over his closest competitor, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto.
Round round one winner Davi Millsaps, aboard his Rockstar Energy Racing Suzuki, was third overall. His third place finish was enough to maintain his series lead heading into round three.
TwoTwo Motorsports’ Chad Reed took his second consecutive fourth place finish of the season, while Honda Muscle Milk’s Trey Canard rounded out the top five after falling late in the 20-lap race.
Australia’s Dan McCoy was unable to advance to the 450SX main event in Phoenix, finishing up with a 17th place finish in the LCQ.
Barcia’s round two win now moves him into second place overall on the points ladder, just six points behind series’ leader Millsaps. Canard sits in third place with Reed and Ryan Dungey holding down the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac once again blitzed the 250SX field at round two, scoring his second main event win of the season while extending his points lead over Ken Roczen.
Roczen, aboard his Red Bull KTM, took another second place finish in Phoenix, creating a carbon copy of the season opener’s top two results.
After a scary crash in his heat race, Martin Davalos was forced to qualify through the LCQ. The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider put in an impressive ride and finished up on the podium in third place.
Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda’s Cole Seely took out fourth place, while teammate and 250SX rookie, Jessy Nelson, rounded out the top five.
Australia’s Josh Cachia improved upon his rough season opener, scoring a 14th place finish in the 250SX main event, a vast improvement for the JDR/J-Star/KTM rider. Fellow Aussie Kade Mosig again missed out on a main event spot, finishing seventh in the LCQ.
Tomac now holds a six-point lead over Roczen in the points chase, with Seely sitting another six points behind Roczen in third place.
The 2013 Monster Energy Supercross series will now head back to Anaheim in California on 19 January for round three of the 17 round series.
