The spectacular supercross form Motul Pirelli Suzuki’s Todd Waters will provide an extra boost of confidence for the Queenslander heading into the upcoming 2013 season.
Due to his Team Australia Motocross of Nations commitments, Waters entered the 2012 Terex Australian Supercross Championships with minimum time aboard the 2013 RM-Z450 in supercross testing, but that did little to halt his progress in the four-round series.
The 21-year-old was again in fine form in the premier SX-Open category at Newcastle, winning his heat race comfortably before challenging for the podium during the gruelling 20-lap main event.
After hole-shotting the main event and leading early in the opening lap, Waters came together with title contender Daniel McCoy and went down while in the battle for third, relegating him to ninth position as the chequered flag flew.
“I was happy with the weekend from a riding point of view,” Waters reflected. “I had good speed, so knowing with better preparation coming into the series I could potentially battle for a supercross championship is a good feeling.
“I made a silly move trying to pass McCoy in the main, but you live and learn. Overall I enjoyed supercross, built through it and I learnt a lot with my training.”
Newcastle’s season finale was Waters’ suspected final appearance with the Motul Pirelli Suzuki team, almost certain to be confirmed as KTM’s lead rider in their all-new factory 450 team over the coming weeks.
After finished runner-up in the MX Nationals behind retired Kiwi Josh Coppins with nine podiums in 10 rounds, Waters will enter next season as title favourite regardless of who he signs for during the current silly season.
“This year has been a really great one with Motul Pirelli Suzuki and it’s an awesome team,” he added. “They run a really tight ship and that shows in the results.
“Personally I was able to get through a full year without injuries, had a successful outdoor season, and I can’t wait for next year already.”
Waters finished up the Terex Australian Supercross Championships with a sixth place in the SX-Open series standings.
