After a wet and wild round three of the 2012 Terex Australian Supercross Championships, CDR Yamaha’s Dan McCoy has managed to remain in contention for the coveted SX Open title.
McCoy was able to stick behind his arch-rival Jay Marmont and bring home a fifth place finish, keeping himself in striking distance of the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider as he finished up one spot ahead in fourth.
The Toowoomba circuit saw plenty of rain throughout the event, turning the technical layout into a less than ideal scenario for the competitors.
“It was hard work out there as the mud made it impossible to do any of the jumps, and trying to keep your bike in good shape and your vision clear was just as important as trying to go fast,” said McCoy.
McCoy was unsure of his track position throughout the main event, but the New South Wales native is content with his smart and safe performance.
“It became a bit of survival mode for most of us out there and it was a matter of just getting to the finish line,” he added. “I never really had much of an idea where I was coming, but fifth is okay and consolidates second place for me in the championship with one round to go.”
McCoy sits just seven points behind Marmont in the SX Open class standings with just one round to go. Newcastle will host the season finale and championship decider this weekend on 17 November.
