Australia’s Brett Metcalfe is currently working on securing an outdoor-only deal for the upcoming 2013 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championships while recovering from a serious mid-week practice injury suffered at Glen Helen Raceway.
Metcalfe’s Yoshimura Suzuki ran out of fuel whilst laying down a routine 30-minute moto, unfortunately happening directly in the middle of a rhythm section. The 28-year-old was forced to eject from the bike, which resulted in a badly broken wrist and leg.
With his contact up at Suzuki, the 2011 Southwick national winner has been linked to the Valli Motorsports Yamaha team for 2013, but with nothing yet official, Metcalfe says he will maintain his rehab program to ensure he is at 100 percent upon return.
“I’ll start off with getting back on the bike,” Metcalfe said of his comeback. “I won’t come back until I’m 100 percent healthy and that won’t be in supercross next year. I’ve made a decision to race outdoors only for next year.
“I’ve talked to a few teams and supercross is so big that’s it’s challenging to get a ride like that, but we’ve got a few things we’re working on and they should be set soon.”
Maintaining a calculated attitude, Metcalfe plans to return to his usual full supercross and motocross routine in 2014.
“But for me personally I’m 28 years old, I’m not even near the end of my career yet,” he added. “I don’t want to come back too early in supercross, go down on my wrist and re-injure it. So my plan for now is outdoors only for 2013, then back to full-time supercross and motocross in 2014.”
