Rain again caused tough and demanding conditions at the FIM World Motocross Championship’s Grand Prix of Sweden, Clemente Desalle and Tommy Searle rained supreme as they rode to the top spot of the podium in their respective classes.
Rockstar Energy Suzuki’s Clement Desalle took out the overall MX1 victory with a perfect 1-1 moto score in Uddevalla. Desalle’s win earned him the title of red plate holder, moving himself into first position in the points chase.
Losing the red plate to Desalle was Red Bull KTM’s Antonio Cairoli who suffered two DNF’s on the day due to mechanical issues and rider error.
After being unable to ride the morning warm up due to stomach issues, Monster Energy Kawasaki Pro Circuit’s Christophe Pourcel overcame adversity throughout the day to finish up with a solid 2-2 result for second overall.
Behind the Frenchman Pourcel it was HM Plan KTM UK’s Kevin Strijbos who took home his second podium of the season in Sweden. The Belgian rider rode to a 5-3 result for third overall on the day.
Desalle now leads the championship by just three points over Cairoli, while Pourcel remains in the title hunt just 12 points back from the lead in third position.
The MX2 division saw Team Floride Monster Energy Kawasaki Pro Circuit’s Tommy Searle come out on top of the hotly contested field with 2-1 moto finishes at Uddevalla.
In an impressive effort, the British rider still managed to take the overall win after suffering goggle issues in the first moto which caused him to pull into the pits while leading the moto.
In second place it was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings who took advantage of Searle’s goggle mishap in moto one and take the win. Multiple crashes in moto two saw the Dutch rider only manage a seventh place finish.
Rounding out the top three in Sweden was Dylan Ferrandis on his Rockstar Bud Racing Kawasaki, holeshots in both motos helped the 18-year-old score a 4-3 moto result in the tricky conditions of Uddevalla.
Herlings still holds the MX2 points lead over Searle who sits 16 points behind the Dutch rider, while Herlings’ teammate Jeremy van Horebeek holds down third overall in the standings.
Seven rounds of racing remain as the series heads to the Kegums circuit next for the Grand Prix of Latvia on 15 July.
