Race Recap: Josh Cachia

MotoOnline.com.au recaps South Australia’s MX Nationals with JDR/KTM’s MX2 round winner.

JDR/KTM Factory Racing racer Josh Cachia claimed his first ever MX2 overall win at the fifth round of the Monster Energy MX Nationals at Murray Bridge, SA, on Sunday. It was a breakthrough moment for the kid and may be just the boost of confidence he needs to continue his winning ways.

Josh has always been one of the best starters in the MX2 class, but he also strung together three consistent finishes, including an impressive second in the tough 30-minute final.

MotoOnline.com.au caught up with Cachia after he necked the podium champagne to get his take on the weekend.

Josh, well done on your first MX2 win mate. How does it feel?

Yeah, it feels awesome and I’m so happy. I got stuck behind a few people and couldn’t get the clean air I was after in the first race, but in the second I got a great holeshot and the good feeling I got from that led on to the rest of the moto.

I put together some consistent laps and took that one out, then in the 30-minute race I got another good start and found myself at the front of the pack. Me and Boydy dualled it out towards the end and it was just a lot of fun. Now I’m number one!

You made a reference to NASCAR and clean air on the podium, and just mentioned clean air again now. What’s the story there?

I was watching NASCAR the other day and the commentators were talking about clean air. I thought ‘yeah, I need to grab some clean air at the races’. I think that made the difference today.

Sometimes you just need to focus on one thing like that and everything else falls into place around you.

Getting your first win at a tough track like this has got to be a great confidence booster heading into the second half of the series.

For sure. I think I’ve always got confidence coming into a race, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out the way I want it to. Now I know I can win and there’s no excuse for me to not keep on doing so.

What are you going to get up to over the five-week break?

First I’m going to have a couple of beers and release some steam, then I want to recharge batteries, cruise around the beach and do some surfing, hang out with the homeboys and my girlfriend. I’ll get back into the gym and take up some boxing. You can either make your life stressful or you can make it easy, and I make mine easy somehow.

Tell us a bit about your little confrontation with Ford Dale after the finish-line in that final moto.

On the second lap Ford made a bold move, smashed into my hand and ripped it off the bar. I rode out of the rut with one hand on the throttle. I wasn’t happy with it – I don’t ride like that, but when it comes down to it I’m more than happy to bang bars. I’m one of those guys that doesn’t care – if you want to get in a war with me, then sweet. Wars are good.

Long hair, don’t care?

Yep, long hair, don’t care. That’s my new game. I’m recruiting people at the moment. Whoever’s got long hair and don’t care, come and see me and I’ll patch you up.

[Laughs] thanks, mate. Enjoy the break!
