MotoOnline.com.au rates DEFT Family’s premium Catalyst 2 Glove.

Glove specific companies have made a huge impact in the world of moto in recent years, and one of the most popular brands available on the market is DEFT Family.

Owned by freestyle motocross hero Nate Adams in a partnership with riding buddy Logan Darien, Deft was launched last year and has ridden the wave of immediate success.

MotoOnline.com.au was lucky enough to take delivery of numerous coloursways in the DEFT collection earlier this year, thanks to Australian distributor Lusty Industries.

This latest Catalyst 2 release includes the already popular ‘BRUSH’ collection in three colorways, as well a special artist edition glove called the ‘EZ Robot’ that was designed and inspired by DEFT tattoo artist/illustrator Erik Campbell.

The Catalyst 2 was released for 2011 after a very successful debut year, continuing the tradition of providing a riding glove with the next to nothing feel DEFT is known for with an airprene closure and soft strap.

The ‘Switch’ colourway that I’ve recently been doing motos with was designed to give a mix matched look while still remaining a pair. This line has the least artwork on the palms of all gloves and has a super clean look.

To be honest, I was the type of guy to wear gloves from the manufacturer that made whatever gear I had been wearing at the time. Some were good, others not so good, but I could deal with whatever matched.

Now, thanks to DEFT, the gloves I wear are usually consistent and the fit/feel of the Catalyst 2 has been exceptional from the outset. I first wore them when I tested Brett Metcalfe’s factory Suzuki in the U.S, but they were comfortable within a lap.

At times I find my thumb get a bit raw (probably too much time in front of the computer!), but the palm section has been incredibly kind to me despite featuring just minimal material that’s only lightly padded (no foam or anything).

The venting at the top has been fine, again due to its minimalist design, plus the stretch panels around the fingers mean that they’ll fit most hands without a worry.

One problem I could see is that the white design gets dirty quickly, but that’s the price most motocross riders are willing to pay in turn to look first class on track.

The grip area on the palms are basically made up from strategically placed DEFT logos, which is cool, and you’ll also find additional rubber-type sections on the index and middle fingers so you can control the brake and clutch levers.

With collaborations alongside companies such as Skullcandy and DC that result in sweet looking gloves across the board, chances are that DEFT will have an ideal glove to match your styling requirements.

Available for $49.95 in dealers nationwide, the Switch colourway comes in royal/white and green/white. Check out www.lustyindustries.com.au for more on the DEFT Family in Oz!
