American Supercross
Big news filtered through last night that Australia will have another rider in the U.S. for 2012, as Ryan Marmont will contest the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Lites class for JDR/J-Star/KTM.
Marmont, who is a multiple-time national champion, impressed earlier this year when he raced the first few West Coast rounds, however at this stage it looks like he could be in for the East Coast Lites series.
Last year Marmont impressed during the West Coast rounds before returning to Australia, however it’s uncertain whether that will be the case again or whether he’ll remain in the U.S. for the entire duration.
Either way, it’s great news for Doggy and for the sport in general as Australia continues to filter more and more riders to the States. That trend looks to be continuing with the Aussie-owned JDR team.
In other American news, James Stewart confirmed today as we all expected that he won’t be riding at this weekend’s Monster Energy Cup in Las Vegas. With a million bucks up for grabs, it’s safe to say that Ryan Villopoto will be in the box seat to take the cake if he can sweep all three 10-lap main events.
After releasing his initial statement that you can find in Breaking News, Stewart revealed on Twitter that the actual reason he won’t be racing is because he simply doesn’t have a team or deal worked out for 2012 yet. He better get that sorted soon!
The interesting thing is, with Stewart, Chad Reed and Ryan Dungey out for a variety of differing reasons, Monster Energy or Feld probably didn’t think there would be such a favourite for the sweep as what RV currently is.
Even more interesting is that the format is kind of similar to what we run in Monster Energy Super X, being short and sharp races with little margin for error. I wonder if those with Super X experience will benefit come Saturday night?
All of Australia’s support will be with South Australian Brett Metcalfe, who will be the lone Aussie on the start gates that we know of this weekend. However, don’t forget that Ben Townley – also an Aussie favourite even though he’s from NZ – will be in the mix.
We can’t wait to see it play out!
Australian Supercross
We are just over one week out from the Monster Energy Super X, Australasian Supercross Championship, which will commence in Melbourne at Knights Stadium on 22 October.
Next week will see our Super X coverage really heat up, the series really shaping up to be a good one despite initial concerns that it won’t be as great as recent years.
It’ll be different, that is for sure, but there is also hope that it could be better than ever before with the mix of old school showground type venues, as well as the spectacular NRL stadiums.
Like he has been for the past few weeks, Guy Streeter has been doing the rounds at the test tracks and this week he’s in Queensland with the Monster Energy Kawasaki team of Billy Mackenzie and Dean Ferris, plus JDR Motorex KTM’s Brenden Harrison and Dan Reardon to name a few.
Keep an eye out for those videos to make their way onto MotoOnline over the next week or so, including the Harrison film tomorrow. For now though, in case you missed it in the Film section on Monday, here’s a sweet clip with Jake Moss…
Yesterday saw CDR Rockstar Energy Drink Yamaha teammates Jay Marmont and Jake Moss head out to WIN Stadium in Wollongong for a press meeting, the pair ranking as some of the brightest sporting talents on the South Coast of NSW.
