Rockstar Motul Suzuki’s Daniel McCoy will step back into the Pro Open category for the Monster Energy Super X, Australasian Supercross Championship, this season.
McCoy rode the Pro Lites class for Suzuki in the MX Nationals this season and scored sixth overall, however it’s now been confirmed that he’ll return to the Opens aboard the factory RM-Z450.
The decision comes from Suzuki after it became clear that American-based South Australian Brett Metcalfe wouldn’t be able to contest Super X, his team instead opting to focus on testing for the 2012 AMA season.
“With Brett unable to return, we have decided that it would be easier to find a fast rider to race the Lites at this stage,” team manager Jay Foreman told MotoOnline.com.au. “We have Daniel on the team already, so it made sense to place him on the 450.”
“I think Daniel will be really good on the 450 and we expect that he could adapt quickly to the bike as he’s raced the class over the past few years.”
McCoy finished sixth last season as the top privateer in the Pro Open ranks, winning a race during the Sydney round at Parramatta.
Rockstar Motul Suzuki is now believed to be in negotiations with an American to contest the Lites class for the series, however Foreman gave no indication as to who the team is considering at this point.
