New Zealander Michael Phillips has confirmed he’s eyeing a return to Australia for the Monster Energy Super X, Australasian Supercross Championship, when it starts this October.

The Kiwi contingent were strong in the MX Nationals during 2011, but while it’s expected Josh Coppins and Cody Cooper will return home instead of contesting Super X, Phillips says he’s looking to clinch a deal for Super X.

Phillips, who was originally called in to substitute for Todd Waters while he was injured, ended the MX Nationals season eighth for the round and sixth in the championship.

“The first two races weren’t great,” Phillips explained. “I had a couple of washouts and finished 11th and 10th. I finished the final two races seventh and sixth, which was a much better result but I didn’t feel like I really got into the groove today.

“Sixth overall in the championship standings after getting the late call up is not a bad result. I will now head home for a break and try and work out a deal to come back to Australia for supercross.”

During Super X 2010, Phillips managed a string of top 10 finishes in the Pro Open class at the New Zealand rounds of the series in Auckland and Dunedin.
