Australian Mark Monea will enter Thursday’s Best Trick competition at X Games 17 in Los Angeles as one of the favourites with his front-flip variation, dubbed as ‘the Carry On’.
This week’s event will be Monea’s first ever X Games, with the Carry On certain to be a crowd favourite after it amazed over one million viewers on YouTube.
A complete newcomer to FMX competition, Monea cut his teeth riding BMX and racing motocross as a youngster around his home state of Victoria, before pursuing a career as a motorcycle mechanic.
More recently Monea worked with his close friend, come X Games rival Cam Sinclair, as his mechanic throughout the season of 2009.
X Games 17’s ‘Best Trick’ competition, being held in the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, will be Monea’s debut into the main stage of action sports.
“I’m really excited to be competing in X Games for my first time. I feel like this is every kids dream and it’s just an amazing opportunity for me. I just can’t wait for it!” Monea said.
“I’ve been putting in the training day in and day out to prepare for the event and I’m ready to go. I’m just really grateful for the opportunity I have and my sponsors, family and friends for their support to get here – I’m going to do the best I can.”
Amazingly, Monea’s career in FMX came almost by accident. Peer pressure from 2010 X Games gold medalist Sinclair pushed Monea to attempt regular motorcycle front flips on a mini bike – which in turn lead to the same attempt on his full-sized 250cc four-stroke machine.
“Cam and I have been friends and riding partners for years,” Monea said. “When he suggested I went for a front flip on the mini bike I did – then went for it again on the big bike and somehow managed to throw a twist in there.
“We called it the Carry On as a bit of fun between our mates and now here I am getting ready to compete in X Games!”
Best Trick starts at 6:15 pm Pacific Standard Time and will be televised LIVE around the world on ESPN.
