Australia’s Chad Reed has taken an emphatic clean-sweep of the second round of the 2011 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship at Freestone in Texas.

The TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray Racing Honda rider rode to a calculated and comfortable victory in moto one, before being gifted the moto win when defending champion Ryan Dungey suffered a technical problem in the closing laps while leading.

After coming from as far back as fourth in moto one, Reed raced to the win after passing Dungey and surprise early leader Christian Craig in the middle stages of moto two.

Moto two saw Reed crash early while giving chase to Dungey, before later being handed the win as Dungey was ruled out with just a couple of laps to run.

The result gave Reed a clear run of 50 points for the round, boosting him into the sole point lead after two of 12 rounds contested to date in the outdoors.

“The first moto was awesome,” said Reed. “You had to be patient. I thought Dungey and I would battle, but I got good lines and pulled away. The second moto was almost the same thing. He put down good laps. I was trying to find my lines and then crashed.

“I put in some strong laps and was on the ragged edge, so I backed it down because I didn’t think it was worth it. Then, unfortunately, he had his problems. It’s a bummer for him.

“You don’t want to win like that, but sometimes you’ve got to be in the right place at the right time. We had the pace to win today, but I almost threw it away with that crash.”

Finishing second overall for the round was the in-form and rejuvenated Davi Millsaps for JGR Yamaha, while new supercross champion Ryan Villopoto rounded out the podium with 3-5 results for Monster Energy Kawasaki.

South Australian Brett Metcalfe finished with 9-3 results for Rockstar Makita Suzuki, sealing his second top five in a row to commence the outdoor title chase.

Michael Byrne went 14-10 for BTOSports.com/BBMX Suzuki, engaged in several battles throughout the round alongside fellow Aussie Tye Simmonds, who took 13-12 results in another consistent effort for JDR/J-Star/KTM.

The Lites class saw Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki teammates Dean Wilson and Tyla Rattray split wins, the latter scoring the overall thanks to his 2-1 results for the round.

Rattray won ahead of Wilson, while local hero Kyle Cunningham rounded out the podium. Wilson now takes over the series lead following two rounds.

“The track was really rough and it was also hot and windy,” said Rattray. “I feel like my conditioning pushed me to the front. I’ve been working hard. This is the best I’ve ever felt, and the most physically fit I’ve been in my entire racing career.

“The weather didn’t make it easy on any of us. I’m looking forward to a weekend off and getting ready for the next round.”
