MX Nationals regulars star in NSW state motocross opener

Serco Yoshimura Yamaha's Kirk Gibbs did double duty at Clarence over the weekend, winning the 450 class.

The opening round of the New South Wales Motocross Championships was dominated by MX Nationals regulars as Serco Yoshimura Yamaha’s Kirk Gibbs won the Pro Open category at Kieran Hall the Pro Lites.

Contested at Clarence in the Blue Mountains, Gibbs took the round win in the Pro Open class on his YZ450F with a near perfect 2-1 result in the two points-paying races.

Gibbs, a full time 250cc rider has taken delivery of a YZ450F to train on and use at regional events to sharpen his skills and is showing good form on the larger capacity bike.

“I’m trying to race as much as possible and ride as many different tracks as possible while we have a month break between the national rounds,” Gibbs explained.

“The weekend went pretty well and it was nice to ride a new track, although the weather was real cold. I enjoy riding both classes as it keeps me busy and increases my fitness. I find that riding the 450 has helped and because it’s new, it keeps me fresh and keen to race.”

Gibbs will again race this weekend at Coolum in Queensland in a bid to sharpen his skills before the Nationals resume at Murray Bridge in South Australia on 8 May.

“I’m going to do a race at Coolum this weekend and I aim to continue to improve my riding again so I have a strong showing at round four of the MX Nationals in South Australia in a couple of weeks,” he added.

Gibbs won the Open category ahead of Rockstar Motul Suzuki’s Daniel McCoy, the former 450cc regular stepping back to the Lites class on a national level this season, and he was able to win the first moto of the day.

In the Lites it was Team 07 Axis Motorsport Honda’s Hall who was victorious, winning ahead of moto two winner Gibbs, while McCoy rounded out the overall podium.

The Under 19s class was won by Corey James from Josh Gilbert and Pirelli Raceline Suzuki’s national title contender Errol Willis.
