Rookie wonder Frossard takes MX1 GP red plate after two rounds

Yamaha's Steven Frossard leads the MX1 GP series following a fine fourth overall in the Netherlands.

Rookie Steven Frossard has taken a stunning lead in the early stages of the 2011 FIM MX1 Motocross World Championship following a consistent second place finish at Valkenswaard on Monday.

The Frenchman finished fourth overall with 2-5 results aboard his factory Monster Energy Yamaha in the Dutch sand, handing him a handy five point lead in the series over Max Nagl.

It was yet another solid performance for Frossard despite suffering a strained collarbone ligament during qualifying, and he’s excited with his early season form.

“I’m really happy to get the red plate, especially because after the crash yesterday I had a lot of pain in my collarbone and it was difficult to ride – the warm-up was impossible this morning,” the 23-year-old explained.

“I spent time with my doctor and trainer and with some massage and strapping I was ready to try the races. I had a really good start in the first moto and it was quite easy to stay focussed after that.

“My goal was to stay in fourth in the next heat and make the podium but my hand slipped off the handlebar after a jump and I crashed.

“I could still manage fifth and it feels great to have the red plate after a Grand Prix in the sand. For me it was easier to ride the 450 here. I could play with the bike and I felt really good on my race bike today.”

Last weekend’s GP was won by world champion Antonio Cairoli, who has moved up from ninth to fourth in the standings.
