FMX: XSport Games cancelled following legal dispute

The XSport Games have officially been cancelled after “an international broadcast company” sought a court injuction preventing the event from taking place.

It’s believed that ESPN is the international broadcast company, the producer of the X Games – the world’s leading action sports event that was launched in the United States in 1995.

Motorcycling New South Wales today announced that Final Siren Events has had to cancel the event, scheduled for this weekend, and partly due to the court junction, the Sydney Showground has also decided to revoke the event licence.

According to the MNSW release, both actions have shocked the team at Final Siren Events. The XSport Games were supposed to stage events from different 10 action sports associations.

“Final Siren Events, as well as MNSW, recognises and appreciates the amount of time and effort sponsors and the national sporting bodies have invested in their support of this event,” the statement said.

“At this time, we also feel for over 300-plus athletes and their families from around the country who have booked their tickets, accommodation and flights to compete.

“It is unconscionable that both parties have chosen to issue this action at the 11th hour, leaving Final Siren Events no option for meeting its commitment to stage this auspicious event.

“We are in the process of challenging this action, and encourage you to join them in this fight for the Action Sports Industry – as a whole. More information will be made available soon, following further legal advice.”

In the meantime, Motorcycling NSW will continue talks with various industry parties in regard to following through with the NSW FMX Cup – integrating it into a three-round state championship series – kicking off early in the new year.
