Former Australian Superbike Champion Glenn Allerton will mark a shock addition to the Yamaha Racing Team in the remaining Formula Xtreme events of 2010, joining the team and completing his first official test as a YRT rider on Monday.
The Valvoline Superbike Team ASBK regular will make his race debut alongside Kevin Curtain and Pat Medcalf on a factory-supported YZF-R1 at Eastern Creek’s final round of the Australian Formula Xtreme Championship Series on 29-31 October, before joining the team in the three-round Australasian FX Superbike Championship summer series in December.
“It’s good to be working with a factory team again and we have been working closely so we can get some good results on the R1 – it’s been really good so far,” Allerton told Motoonline.com.au on Monday night.
“I’m looking forward to racing the R1, it’s got a really broad spread of power and we have done a lot of work over the two days to find a setting that suits my riding style.
“I’ll be racing in the Formula Oz class at Eastern Creek’s final round and then in the FX Superbike class for the summer series – I’ll just be using the final round of the AFXC series for set-up time on the Dunlop control slicks that we’ll be using in the summer series.”
Allerton had a shakedown test onboard the R1 on Saturday before joining the team in an official YRT test at Eastern Creek on Monday.
Allerton has worked hard during the ASBK season to date aboard a privateer Honda CBR1000RR in 2010, sitting third in the point standings with one round remaining.
The move to Yamaha comes as a surprise mid-season expansion to the factory YRT outfit, with the addition of Allerton alongside Curtain, Medcalf and R6-only Rick Olson making it four factory Yamaha riders in the team to round out the season.
