Brett Matcalfe (19) was top Australian after battling amongst the likes of American favourites Ryan Dungey (1) and Andrew Short (3).

Team Australia has finished in sixth place at the 2010 Motocross of Nations (MXoN) held at Colorado’s Thunder Valley Motocross Park in the United States on 25-26 September.

The standout performer for the team was Brett Metcalfe, whose third and fifth places put Australia in good stead, while solid efforts from MXoN debutants Jay Marmont and Dean Ferris secured Australia’s place in the top 10 overall.

Originally hailing from Mannum in South Australia, Metcalfe has been living and riding in America for years, with the expat in fine form leading the Australian charge.

Three-time Australian champion Marmont was sitting in eighth place in the first moto until being landed on by Trey Canard on the last lap, forcing him back into 18th place, although still proving he has the talent to ride with the world’s best with 18-10 results.

His 10th place in moto two marked another remarkable effort as he fought back through the field from around 20th position.

For Ferris, who stepped back onto the 250cc machine after riding to third place on a 450cc at the Australian Motocross Championship, 18th and 27th places are still an impressive way to make a des Nations debut, in addition to the incredible experiences he’ll be able to take away from the event.

The event was wrapped up by the home USA team of Ryan Dungey, Trey Canard and Andrew Short, joined on the podium overall by Belgium and Germany.
