Yamaha's Kevin Curtain scored a thrilling Supersport win in Queensland on Sunday.

Queensland Raceway’s fourth round of the InsureMyRide Australian Supersport Championship saw Yamaha Racing Team vetern Kevin Curtain put Yamaha back in the winner’s circle on Sunday, breaking the win streak of Team Suzuki’s series leader Troy Herfoss.

Herfoss, in just his second season of Supersport racing, won the opening three rounds of the season on the factory-backed GSX-R600, however the experience of former World Supersport runner-up Curtain put an end to his dominance at the Ipswich-based circuit.

A battle never eventuated in the opening 16-lap affair when Herfoss’ gear lever became loose, however race two saw an all out dogfight between the pair that went down to a final corner pass from Herfoss that he couldn’t stick.

“I’m really pleased with the weekend results, although I’m a little annoyed with myself for making a few mistakes,” Herfoss said. “It was great to race with a person like Kev and I appreciate what he said after the race – he’s a great rider. It was good hard racing, but clean and fair.

“It was unfortunate in race one when the gear-lever knob vibrated loose as it meant I could not race for the win. But to extend my championship lead was more important than race wins this weekend, so I’m happy with that. The bike was awesome and the team did a great job.”

Curtain was excited to win on return to the category with Yamaha, the team electing to focus on the Australian Formula Xtreme Championship for 2010.

“I was determined to put up a good fight today and see how I stack up against the regular ASBK guys,” Curtain commented. “It is a track that you really have to be switched on for and be prepared to race at high intensity.

“Fortunately I was able to win both races, but I had to work for it all the way. A huge thanks must go to the YRT guys who have done plenty of long hours in the lead up to this race and their ability to get the bike spot on was evident today.”

Herfoss’ result stretched his series lead to a comfortable 28 points with just two rounds remaining, while Curtain sits a surprising eighth after sitting out two of the four rounds run to date this season. Curtain is also the current AFXC FX1000 and FX600 title leader.
