WSBK: McConnell for Supersport wildcard at Silverstone

Aussie Billy McConnell will line up as a World Supersport wildcard this weekend at Silverstone.

South Australian Billy McConnell will contest the Silverstone round of the World Supersport Championship as a wildcard this weekend, his CAME Yamaha British Supersport team entering him for the round.

McConnell and teammate James Westmoreland currently lie joint second in the British championship and having secured seven podiums including three victories, both feeling confident ahead of the weekend.

“This is another big weekend for the CAME Yamaha team and although there is less pressure as there isn’t a championship for us to win, we still are coming to Silverstone with the intention of giving the regular riders a good fight,” McConnell commented.

“I definitely want to be inside the top five and I think that is possible. We have tested there already so we know the new track and we have a point to prove. We are the home team and we want to show what we are capable of for the home crowd.”

CAME Yamaha team manager Steve Rodgers is excited at the prospects of entering the team as a wildcard on the world stage.

“The CAME Yamaha team are really feeling fired up for this weekend,” he said. “It will definitely be beneficial for both riders to have the opportunity to race against their world championship counterparts without having a championship to consider.

“I would like to think that both riders are capable of finishing in the top six – the last time we entered as a wildcard back in 2008 we finished fifth, so hopefully we can repeat or even improve on that. It will be fantastic for CAME to be represented with their own team for a world championship race and we will be giving it everything.”
