With Pat Medcalf becoming the first Australian champion of the 2009 Australian Superbike Championship season in the Superstock 1000 class on Saturday, six new champions were crowned on Sunday.

The big winner of the day was newly crowned Australian Superbike Champion Josh Waters, the 22-year-old wrapping up the series after a pair of dominant victories for Team Joe Rocket Suzuki.

Waters was joined in the winner’s circle by new Australian Supersport Champion Bryan Staring, who added his first Supersport title to the 125cc Grand Prix title that he won in 2004.

Privateer Cup winners in the Superbike and Supersport categories were CJC Racing’s Craig Coxhell and ESG’s Shannon Johnson respectively, while Jordan Burgess wrapped up the Superstock Triple Challenge Cup for Teterin Motosport/Oleon Motologic Racing.

The Superstock 600 class was taken out in a wet race two on Sunday morning by Yamaha rider Rick Olson, the former Supermoto rider proving his ability on the asphalt with a solid series win in his second season of road racing.

Queenslander Blake Leigh-Smith went back-to-back in the 125cc Grand Prix category after a hard fought battle with multiple-time champion Peter Galvin, winning his title on an Aprilia in 2009.

The top four-stroke MD250H rider in the 125GP class was Motologic Racing’s ‘Mad’ Mike Jones, who dominated the season on his way to wrapping up that class in the finale.

Finally, the Sidecar class was taken out by Shane Soutar and Jeff Rowe, despite having a difficult weekend at the Island and scoring 10th overall for the round after taking pole position.
