Yamaha Racing Team rider Pat Medcalf wrapped up his second successive national Superstock title at Phillip Island’s seventh round of the Australian Superbike Championship today, adding the 1000cc title to the 600cc crown he won in 2008.
Medcalf qualified second behind Teterin Motosport/Oleon Motologic Racing Honda rider Jordan Burgess before taking off in the opening STK1000 race of the weekend this afternoon, winning by 7.539 seconds and setting a new lap record of 1:38.216 for the class in the process.
“I was nervous going into that race and wasn’t sure I could win to be honest, but I got a decent start and took the victory,” explained Medcalf after the race. “I’m just so happy to win the title and get it over and done with. The pressure’s off now so I can go and have fun on Sunday. I can’t thank my team enough – I’m stoked.”
Medcalf will likely step up to the Supersport category with Yamaha for 2010, although it’s yet to be finalised as the series calendar and class structure is still to be confirmed by series promoter IEG.
