Italian manufacturer Aprilia has confirmed that it has abandoned any plans of competing in the Moto2 World Championship when it debuts in 2010, announcing the news overnight.
In a statement made by the Piaggio Group, owners of Aprilia, it was confirmed that the manufacturer from Noale won’t be fielding any factory bikes as planned, or supply its chassis to any competing teams.
The Moto2 series will feature a production-based Honda CBR600RR control engine next year, with Aprilia deciding that fielding a factory effort equipped with an engine from a rival manufacturer isn’t possible.
“In the Group’s view, the technological and racing characteristics of the Moto2 championship are not such as to make participation in this type of race of strategic interest for Aprilia,” Piaggio stated. “The Group believes, therefore, that involvement in races where all competitors must necessarily use the engine technology of a rival constructor would serve no purpose and would be detrimental to its image as a leading Italian and European motorcycle manufacturer.”
It is believed that Aprilia will expand its World Superbike team with the RSV4 for next year, while also keeping a close eye on the MotoGP regulations if the series is to introduce a 1000cc production-based engine rule for 2012.
Team Aspar, who had signed Julian Simon and Mike di Meglio for next year, could take over development of the Aprilia chassis in-house, or simply switch to the favoured Moriwaki chassis in the coming weeks depending on the expense of both options.
