The fight for the 2009 Woodstock Bourbon Australian Superbike Championship will go down to the wire, with series leader and defending champion Glenn Allerton holding a slim two point lead going into the season finale on 27-29 November.

Allerton will lead the way heading into the final round to be contested at Phillip Island next month, hoping to hold off Team Joe Rocket Suzuki rookie wonder Josh Waters and Motologic Oleon Racing Honda teammate Wayne Maxwell – the in-form riders in the latter stages of the season.

The penultimate round was contested alongside the MotoGP World Championship round at the Island 10 days ago, where the ASBK category was featured as a championship point-scoring round in two out of the four races completed over the weekend.

It was the second event in a row that the ASBK category was run at Phillip Island, coming just weeks after the inaugural ASBK Open at the V8 Supercars round, with the finale also set to feature at the picturesque 4.445-kilometre circuit.

Both the Superbike and Supersport categories provided some of the most spectacular racing of the weekend in front of the world’s best, highlighted by the addition of American AMA Superbike regulars Jake Holden and David Anthony.

It’s expected that the 2010 ASBK series will again have a round alongside the MotoGP weekend as well as the WSBK round early in the year, with selected other events all but confirmed alongside the V8 Supercars as official championship rounds.

An announcement regarding the new season is expected by series promoter IEG in the coming weeks.
