GLENN ALLERTON/TWO THREE PR:

Current Australian Superbike Champion Glenn Allerton has maintained his series lead in the 2009 championship chase after scoring a race victory on his way to finishing second overall for the round at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway on 7-9 August.

The 28-year-old Motologic Racing star slotted his Honda CBR1000RR into fourth position on the grid following Saturday’s one-lap Superpole Shootout qualifying session, setting himself up for a solid race day from the front row on Sunday.

Race one on Sunday got off to a breathtaking start for the local favourite, with his motorcycle developing an issue with the ECU on the sighting lap and forcing him to switch to his spare bike just in time for the opening 13-lap race of the weekend.

Allerton was not deterred by the switch, sitting behind championship challenger Josh Waters for the opening 12 laps before striking on the last – holding on to win the opening race of the weekend at the 3.93-kilometre circuit.

Race two was a more challenging race for Allerton, fighting his way through the field after a bad start and eventually finishing in third position behind Waters and Motologic teammate Wayne Maxwell at the completion of the race.

The result was good enough for second overall in the round and also enabled Allerton to maintain his series lead over Waters by seven points as the series enters the second half of the season, with over 6000 spectators witnessing the thrilling action on Sunday.

Round five of the ASBK series will be contested at Mallala Motorsport Park in South Australia on 28-30 August, the venue where Allerton won at last season and boosted him toward his first ever national Superbike title.

In race one we had the same technical glitch that we had in Queensland, but it didn’t seem to affect us once I got out on track for the race with the spare bike. The spare bike is a little bit different with more power, so it probably worked to my advantage and I was able to make the move into turn two on the final lap of the race and take the win.

In race two I got a bad start and used my tyre up trying to get to the front. I was slipping around a lot and thought I could’ve got second past Maxwell until Robbie Bugden made a move on me with a couple of laps to go, and that ruined my chances of passing Wayno for the race. Anyway, second overall is good for us and anything can happen in this racing – we just need to keep on pushing.

The Motologic Racing team did a great job all weekend and I’m still leading the championship heading into Mallala. We’ve done a good job so far by finishing on the podium at each round, so I’m confident heading into these final few rounds that we can defend the championship together and retain the number one plate.
