Current MX Nationals Champion Jay Marmont writes a blog for MotoOnline.com.au to give us the scoop as he leads the series into the final two rounds.
After the South Australian and Western Australian rounds of this year’s MX Nationals series I’ve had a bit of time off considering we’ve had five weeks in between rounds, so I’ve just had a bit of time to chill out with my baby Lila and fiancé Abby.
We’ve had the opportunity to get a few things sorted with Lila because she’s been sick, so that was good, and apart from that I’ve been getting back into training and riding to try get that little bit of extra speed for the last couple of rounds.
Looking back to South Australia I was feeling a little bit crook heading into the round and there’s been a lot of stress going on in my life, so I didn’t ride real good there and I hope that it will be my worst round of the series.
I went okay in the first race and finished second in that, before in the second race I was running in third and had a big crash and hit my head pretty hard, so that was a difficult round for me overall.
Western Australia wasn’t too bad. I started the round off with a crash and then got better from there, winning the last race pretty easy. So that round ended on a good note and I was able to beat Boydy [CDR Rockstar Yamaha teammate Cheyne Boyd] at what he claims to be his best, which is the sand, so I was pretty happy about that.
The rivalry between Cheyne and I as teammates is hard, but we’ve been teammates before and have gone for championships together. Now we are both at the pointy end and every weekend we want to win, so it’s a hard thing to deal with but we’ll just have to keep fighting it out to the end of the series.
Away from racing we’ve had to knock down our track that’s only around 15 minutes from our house, and we’ve lived in Wollongong our whole life so it’s been heart wrenching to knock it all down.
We had a Supercross and Motocross track there, fully irrigated, and it was unreal. To knock all that down and walk away from the effort that we’ve put in over the last 12 years has been hard knowing that we’re never going to be allowed back there.
It was hard to walk away from something that’s probably been the key in our racing, and it’s going to be hard to replace. Just trying to find a Supercross track will be the hardest thing because there’s not too many around, but for motocross for the time being it won’t be too bad because we have a few tracks around our area.
For Super X this year it’s going to be tough, but we’ve had a few people calling us and offering land to come and build a track for the upcoming series, so we’ll just have to weigh up our best option for something that’s convenient for us to go to each day to put down our laps.
As for the final two rounds of the MX Nationals that are coming up over the next couple of weekends, coming into Lakes this weekend it’s a track that I’ve ridden at a lot as a junior and seem to go pretty well there because I was able to win in 2007 and 2008.
I know that Ando [Craig Anderson] will be good because he’s got a point to prove, Andrew McFarlane is good on the hard pack tracks too, and obviously Boydy will be up there as well.
It won’t be an easy round for sure, but I feel pretty good heading into it and I’m confident for the weekend.
Hopefully at Coolum for the final round I can play it smart all day, and hopefully I can just battle Boydy all day because that’s going to be the battle for the championship so we’ll have to see what happens.
I’ll check back in a couple of weeks and let you guys know how it goes!
